Class Descriptions

 

Cardio Boogie

How many times have you heard that you need cardiovascular activity in order to lose weight and stay healthy? If you need cardio but do not like the treadmill or hiking up a hill, this class is for you. Attention, ladies with an attitude! Finally a dance class for you. Set to music of all eras, this class is full of old and new dance moves to remind you that, “you can still shake what ya mama gave ya.” Let the men stay home and watch football and come to get in shape and have fun in a nurturing environment with no pressure. NO DANCE EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

 

Burlesque

Embrace your inner Diva and celebrate the art of being feminine and fabulous! Each class will leave you feeling inspired and empowered. Vintage Burlesque is a once a week drop in class that teaches you the classic moves of Burlesque, transporting you to the decade of the 40’s where the inner temptress was forbidden and desired. Take this class and you will learn a different showgirl routine each week. (please note; no nudity involved and suitable for all women of all levels).

Suggested Attire: heels that you can dance in (or character shoes), and a dress you can move in.

 

Broadway

Students will learn original choreography from Broadway musicals. This exciting class is unique to our youth division as the students will be exposed to dance styles that aren't typically offered in other studios. This class will make students versatile and ready for the big time!

Suggested attire: comfortable clothing (not skirts or shorts) and comfortable athletic shoes or jazz shoes.

 

DanceAlots Reportoire

The DancAlots are a group of young talented rising stars. These young children and teens are directed by Dancer/Choreographer, Thalia Thomas who takes them on a journey through time, discovering the exciting, empowering and eclectic world of music, dance and theatre. This dance company was designed to expose children to the endless genres of dance, introducing them to the fundamentals of performing, and becoming strong, confident and creative individuals. From Broadway, to Television, to Movies and back, The DancAlots have covered Jazz, Hip-Hop, Modern, Swing, Ballroom, Bollywood and beyond. In addition to dance, members are encouraged to contribute other talents, enriching the performances with live music, acting and singing. Being in the DancAlots gives you many opportunities, including camaraderie and a chance to succeed. For more on the Dancalots, click here.

 

Hip Hop Fusion

This class will teach you basic Hip Hop dance moves. Learn your favorite moves so you can hit the dance floor. Choreographers will expose students to all styles of street dance including Commercial Hip Hop, Break dancing, Pop Locking, House and much more. Dance attire: Comfortable clothes and sneakers Mini, Junior, Senior Hip Hop: Hip hop is a fast paced, fun type of dance. Ever seen a really cool music video and wanted to dance like that? Come learn the basics of hip hop and a new dance each class.

Attire: comfortable pants and shirt, sneakers. Hair pulled back.

 

Lifts & Tricks

Learn challenging and show stopping tricks and lifts. This class will teach you correct techniques for floor work and aerials. You will learn trust techniques with class mates, teamwork and fun, athletic movements.

Dance attire: Comfortable clothes, nothing restricting and sneakers/jazz shoes. No jewelry.

 

Mini Ballet

This class is perfect for your shining super star! Dancers will learn the fundamentals of correct classical Ballet posture and control. Basic Ballet terminology will be covered and music appreciation will be a main focus. Small interval breaks are offered for attention retention and improvisation is also encouraged so dancers feel free to express themselves through the grace and beauty of Ballet. Parents are not permitted to observe however monthly in studio performances are offered so our students can show family and friends how much they are improving.

Attire: Pink tights and any color leotard and ballet shoes are required. Soma provides additional props, costumes and accessories to enhance their experience. Please note: students must be potty trained. 

 

Mini Hip Hop

This is the highlight of every kids week! Our Soma Hip Hop students cannot wait to hit the dance floor and show off their moves. In this class, students learn warm up exercises, skills across the floor and correct stretching techniques. To balance fun and work, we add dance games and improvisation and learn a different dance routine every week.  Parents are not permitted to observe however monthly in studio performances are offered so our students can show family and friends how much they are improving.

Attire: Students should wear comfortable clothes and must have their knees covered due to floor work. Shoes are optional. 

 

 

Modern

Senior/Adult Modern is expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres, including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Dancers will strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Class will include a technical warm up, across the floor exercises ending with a center combination learning choreography. We will explore movement based on image work, vigorous physical training of dance techniques that help to develop muscle and tone, flexibility and agility, as well as increase intense physical stamina with a playful imagination.

Attire: Leotard/ tights/ dance pants (no color restrictions). Comfortable dance attire that does not restrict the body’s flexibility. Danced barefoot- no shoes required.

 

Pilates Mat

Traditional East Coast Pilates Mat work.  You will be taken through a series of full body Pilates exercises performed one after the other. The class focuses on the “power house” strength (abdominals), strengthening and stretching the spine, increasing flexibility, promoting elongated musculature and developing muscular balance and coordination.  The class is dynamic, fast paced and demands discipline and focus.  Use of weights, tension bands, weighted poles for added results.  All levels.

 

Swing

Learn dance combinations developed with the swing style of Jazz music in the 1920's-1950's. This fun and energetic class will shake, rattle and roll your body! Learn new steps or relive steps from your youth as you take a trip down memory lane. Dance attire: Comfortable clothes and shoes.

 

Tap Tech

Tap Tech is an opportunity for students to learn Tap the right way. Taught at a basic level, Tap Tech will teach the fundamentals of Tap dance and will give you the chance to develop the skills you need to execute a Tap routine.

Tap shoes required.
